More than two million dollars worth of artwork debuted in August 1987 when the Detroit People Mover opened, with each piece reflecting the character of the neighborhood where the station is located. Regional, national, and international artists were invited to create proposals for each station, with tile, mosaic, and other durable materials given preference. Four of the pieces were handcrafted at Pewabic Pottery, Detroit’s historic ceramics studio. People Mover riders can view the majority of the artwork from the trains.
