It was formerly known as the International Afro-American Museum of Detroit and was established by Dr. Charles H. Wright and 33 local citizens. With more than 20,000 artifacts and archival materials, the museum serves as a repository for collecting and documenting the contributions of African American people and as a learning and resource center for all ages and ethnic groups.
The highlight of the museum is the 16,000 square foot core exhibition, Of the People: The African American Experience, which covers more than 600 years of African American history from the Middle Passage of the transatlantic slave trade to the present. The museum also has two changing exhibition galleries which host traveling exhibitions that feature African and African American art, crafts, history and technology. The world class facility also features a glass domed rotunda, several sets of intricately designed doors by Richard Bennett, made of materials ranging from patinated brass to carved ebony, a research library, museum store, 317-seat state-of-the-art theater, classrooms for educational programs and the Lewis H. Latimer Cafe.
