Visitors to the zoo can ride the miniature railroad that carries passengers to or from the main station near the park entrance and the Africa station at the farthest corner of the park.

The Detroit Zoo exhibits the "Chimps of Harambee." The seven and a half million dollar exhibit encompasses four acres of the zoo property and features a two and one half acre naturalistic gorilla habitat surrounded by a dry moat on the north side with indoor viewing, and a water moat on the south side featuring chimpanzees.

Be sure to visit the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, an $8.2 million project that includes a hummingbird/ butterfly garden, multimedia interactives, a coral reef aquarium, theater and artwork.

Late November through early December, the zoo features Wild Lights, a festive tour of more than 50 animals and holiday icons lit up with thousands of lights.

Detroit"s Zoological Institute also operates the Belle Isle Zoo, a smaller 13-acre facility featuring a 3/4 mile elevated walkway. Visitors may view exotic and native animals in their various exhibits. The Belle Isle Zoo is open May-October.
