The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is the most widely heard symphony orchestra in the United States, reaching a national weekly radio audience of over 1,000,000 listeners in 49 states. The DSO can be heard every week in Michigan on WDET-FM, 101.9. The DSO’s national radio broadcast history dates back to 1922, when it became the first orchestra to broadcast a complete symphonic program over the airwaves.

After a 50-year hiatus of performing at various other Detroit venues, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra returned to Orchestra Hall, its historic home. Following a series of marches and sidewalk benefit performances, the musicians and friends of the DSO were able to save their elegant, old-world hall from the wrecking ball. A year later it was added to the National Register of Historic Sites. In 1989, after a painstaking, near 20-year restoration, the Orchestra moved back into its original quarters. Today the Hall is considered by many of the world’s finest musicians to be in the acoustic class of Boston’s Symphony Hall and New York’s Carnegie.

The DSO is heard live by over 400,000 people annually in Classical, Pops, Jazz, Christmas Festival, Special Events, Young People’s Tiny Tots Series concerts at Orchestra Hall and other Metro-Detroit and outstate locations. In the summer months, the DSO can be heard around Michigan at Interlochen, Meadow Brook Music Festival and Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village. In the summer of 1994, the DSO began a summer residency at the prestigious Bravo! Colorado Vail Valley Music Festival located in Vail, Colorado.
